Sedation Options Available
When dental problems or cavities arise, the challenge isn’t just fixing the tooth—it’s doing so in a way that feels safe, gentle, and positive for your child.
At Destination Pediatric Dentistry, we specialize in caring for children both dentally and emotionally, making sure every step of the process supports their comfort. With advanced training and state-of-the-art equipment, Dr. Matson is able to offer a variety of safe sedation options tailored to each child’s needs.
Mild Sedation with Nitrous Oxide (“Laughing Gas”)
Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is the most common and gentle form of sedation for children. It helps ease nerves and creates a calm, relaxed feeling while your child remains awake and able to communicate. The effects wear off quickly once the gas is turned off, so kids are usually back to their normal selves right after the visit. This option is perfect for children with mild anxiety or those needing shorter, simpler treatments.
Moderate Sedation with Oral Conscious Sedation
For children with a bit more anxiety, or for those needing longer dental work, oral conscious sedation may be a helpful choice. Given as a liquid medication, it helps your child feel very calm and drowsy, but they will still be able to respond to simple directions. Throughout the entire visit, we closely monitor your child’s comfort and safety. This option allows us to complete more involved treatment while keeping the experience stress-free.
General Anesthesia
In some situations, general anesthesia is the best option—particularly for very young children, those with special health care needs, or when extensive dental treatment is required. Under general anesthesia, your child will be fully asleep while we complete their dental care. Safety is always our top priority, and these procedures are carried out with the highest standards of monitoring and care by a trained and experienced anesthesiologist. General anesthesia allows us to provide necessary treatment in a way that’s both safe and comfortable for your child.
